West Rand Police Arrest Suspect in R700 000 Krugersdorp Copper Cable Theft Bust

GAUTENG – West Rand police have arrested a 42-year-old suspect and recovered a substantial quantity of suspected stolen copper cables valued at approximately R700 000. The arrest follows an intelligence-driven operation targeting copper cable theft, executed on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, through a collaboration between the West Rand District Crime Intelligence and Krugersdorp Visible Policing units.

The operation was initiated after law enforcement received credible intelligence regarding a white Isuzu truck allegedly being used to transport stolen copper cables from Rustenburg to a scrapyard in Krugersdorp. Upon verification of the tip-off, police tracked and successfully intercepted the identified vehicle in the Tarlton area.

A subsequent search of the truck yielded a large haul of copper cables suspected to be stolen. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and is currently facing a formal charge of possession of suspected stolen property.

The 42-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear before the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, to answer to the charges.

South African Police Service (SAPS) officials reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure and combating the illicit trade and theft of copper cables. Authorities emphasized that such criminal activities not only inflict significant financial losses but also severely disrupt essential services, adversely impacting local businesses and communities.
