Foiled Cash Heist Triggers Deadly Crown Mines Shopping Centre Shootout

GAUTENG — A brazen cash robbery escalated into a deadly Crown Mines Shopping Centre shootout on Thursday morning, leaving one suspected gunman dead and sparking an intense provincial dragnet. Gauteng law enforcement is currently probing multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, and illegal weapons possession following the violent clash on 13 August 2026, at approximately 10:30 a.m.

According to the Gauteng Police Spokesperson, the chaos began when an employee, flanked by a safety officer, was moving an undisclosed sum of money to the retail hub’s primary vault. Two armed robbers intercepted the duo, forcing them to the floor at gunpoint before snatching the cash and a guard’s mobile phone.

However, the victim managed to discreetly trigger a concealed panic alarm, rapidly mobilizing reinforcements. As the robbers fled to their getaway car—a red Volkswagen Polo carrying five individuals—guards stationed at the main gates noticed the vehicle speeding toward the exit.

When security teams moved to block the fleeing suspects, the criminals opened fire. This sparked a fierce gun battle that ended when the suspects’ VW Polo slammed into another car entering the complex. One of the robbers, trapped inside the wrecked vehicle, was killed by gunfire.

The remaining four suspects scattered on foot to evade capture. In a display of swift community action, local taxi operators prevented one gunman from hijacking a Toyota Quantum, while mall guards tackled and detained another. Two other suspects sustained gunshot injuries during the skirmish and are currently hospitalized under heavy police surveillance. Tragically, a security officer was also wounded by gunfire and is undergoing medical treatment.

Two accomplices managed to evade the immediate dragnet and are currently the focus of an active manhunt by provincial detectives.

Investigators quickly secured the scene, recovering the stolen funds in full alongside a concerning arsenal: three handguns and an AK-47 assault rifle. The Gauteng Police Spokesperson confirmed that the identifying serial numbers on all four firearms had been deliberately ground away to obscure their origins. Ballistic experts will now analyze the weapons to determine if the syndicate is connected to a broader string of regional crimes.

Furthermore, forensic checks on the red Volkswagen Polo revealed it was displaying fake license plates. Records indicate the vehicle was previously hijacked and had been registered as stolen with the Jeppe Police Station prior to the mall attack.
