Umzinyathi Police Seize 7 Illegal Firearms Linked to Stock Theft

KWAZULU-NATAL — Law enforcement officials in the Umzinyathi District have taken a major step against rural crime syndicates, arresting a 42-year-old man and seizing a cache of seven illegal firearms linked to local stock theft operations. The significant bust occurred following a targeted, intelligence-driven raid in the Bahulazi Reserve.

Acting on a tip-off regarding an individual supplying weapons to criminals, the Umzinyathi District Crime Intelligence Unit joined forces with the Newcastle Public Order Policing (POP) Unit. The collaborative teams descended upon a property within the Nhlanhleni policing precinct during the early hours of Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

Investigators allege that the suspect was not only hoarding the weapons but was actively hiring them out to individuals involved in stock theft and related rural crimes.

A thorough search of the premises yielded an alarming arsenal of unlicensed weapons and ammunition. Police recovered four pistols alongside three rifles, specifically identifying a .303 rifle, a Mosin-Nagant rifle, and an SKS 7.62 rifle. The suspect was immediately taken into custody for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

He is currently being held at the Nhlanhleni Police Station and is scheduled to appear before the Msinga Magistrate’s Court to face charges. Meanwhile, forensic experts will subject all seven confiscated firearms to rigorous ballistic testing to determine if the weapons can be tied to other violent crimes or unsolved cases across the country.

Major General Francis Slambert, District Commissioner of Umzinyathi, praised the officers involved in the early-morning operation, emphasizing the danger that illicit weapons pose to community safety.

“We will not tolerate unlicensed firearms being in the hands of criminals,” Major General Slambert stated. “The recovery of these firearms is a significant step in preventing serious and violent crimes. We remain committed to removing illegal firearms from our communities and will continue working tirelessly to ensure that offenders are brought to justice.”
