Suspect Arrested for Possession of Explosive Detonators in Westonaria Following Underground Mine Pursuit

GAUTENG — A suspect arrested for possession of explosive detonators in Westonaria is facing serious charges after a security patrol uncovered a dangerous cache of materials deep underground. The apprehension highlights the persistent battle against illicit mining activities in the West Rand District.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 04 August 2026, during a routine inspection of the Kloof No. 1 Shaft. While navigating Level 25, two security officers spotted two individuals carrying a lamp through a restricted, non-working section of the mine.

When the officers moved in to investigate, the two men attempted to evade capture by fleeing into the tunnels. However, the security team managed to catch one of the individuals before he could escape.

During the subsequent detention and questioning, the man failed to produce a standard employee clock card, identifying him as an illegal miner rather than an authorized worker.

A search of the suspect’s bag revealed the primary cause for alarm: eight explosive detonators. Following the discovery, he was formally taken into custody.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed the details of the successful operation, emphasizing the risks associated with unregulated explosives in local mining shafts. The suspect is expected to appear in court to answer for the unlawful possession of explosive materials.
