The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has reported a major clampdown on criminal activity across South Africa, resulting in 656 arrests over a recent operation. However, the crackdown came at a heavy cost, with 22 police officers killed in the line of duty.
Among the successes were multiple drug lab busts, where large quantities of narcotics were seized. The Hawks also dismantled several illegal firearms operations and recovered stolen goods.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbongo praised the efforts of law enforcement but acknowledged the dangers officers face daily. “While we celebrate these arrests, we mourn the brave officers who lost their lives in the fight against crime,” she said.
The operation targeted syndicates involved in drug trafficking, armed robbery, and organized crime. Authorities have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities as investigations continue.
