One CIT suspect has been killed – with two of his accomplices critically wounded – after a shootout with police and security teams on the KZN South Coast.
They are linked to the brazen cash van robbery in KwaMashu’s L-Section last week.
Members from the SAPS Provincial/District Tracking and Tracing Team, Umzinto K9, and ET Rapid Response TRT were following up on information about the gang making its way to Ixopo.
While searching the Phungashe area, the team spotted the suspects’ vehicle, which was used in the robbery.
The suspects allegedly opened fire on officers in an attempt to escape, but they were shot in the subsequent gunfight.
Two guns have been recovered.
The vehicle – a Toyota Urban Cruiser – has been identified as one taken in a hijacking in Umlazi and used during the KwaMashu CIT.
Two more suspects are on the run.
