A 25-year-old man from De Aar, Northern Cape, has been sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his eleven-month-old child.
The incident took place on Saturday, 30 November 2024. Police were called to the scene at approximately 19:30 following reports that the accused was assaulting his girlfriend and toddler.
Upon arrival, officers learned the child had already been transported by ambulance to a local hospital in De Aar. The toddler was declared deceased upon arrival at the hospital.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and remained in custody until his appearance in the Regional Court in Phillipstown. The court found him guilty and imposed the sentence accordingly.
In addition to the prison term, the court declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm under Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000).
