Man Arrested for Unlicensed Firearm After Shooting

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from KwaNyathi locality for possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with 10 rounds of live ammunition. The arrest took place on Thursday, 09 April 2026, at approximately 14:00.

Police responded to a report that a 34-year-old man had been shot in the area. Officers followed up on the information and recovered the firearm, leading to the arrest of the 31-year-old suspect.

According to preliminary investigation, the arrested suspect was not the shooter. Police allege that his friend fired the shot, then fled the scene and left the firearm behind.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body and was admitted to a hospital for medical treatment.

Further investigation revealed that the recovered firearm had been reported stolen in a theft case registered in Potchefstroom in October 2022.

Police investigations continue to trace and arrest the alleged shooter. The arrested suspect is expected to appear before Flagstaff Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
