Police detain suspects for the possession of unlicensed firearms and a hijacked vehicle

Members of the Western Cape police arrested suspects for the illegal possession of firearms during crime prevention initiatives on Wednesday, 26 March 2025, in separate incidents.

Members of Western Cape Public Order Police were conducting stop and search operations in Sneeuberg Street, Heideveld to quell the ongoing gun violence in the area when they spotted an unknown man who tried to run away when he saw the police members. The members chased him on foot, apprehended and searched him upon which they found a 9mm pistol with ammunition in his possession. The 17 year old suspect did not have a license to possess the firearm and was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated matter, members of the Cape Town K9 Unit arrested three suspects for the possession of a hijacked vehicle and recovered a 9mm pistol and a revolver with ammunition in Wetton Road. The members followed up information of a black Citroen that was hijacked and driving in the Claremont area. The vehicle was spotted, stopped and searched.

The suspects aged between 20 and 40 face charges for the possession of a hijacked vehicle and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects will make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Wynberg Magistrates’ courts once they have been charged.
