LAMBERTS BAY — Following a tense armed robbery at a Lambert’s Bay liquor store, local law enforcement successfully apprehended five suspects and recovered stolen goods alongside a firearm. The swift arrests were made after police intercepted the suspects’ getaway vehicle heading toward the Piketberg area.
The frightening ordeal unfolded on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, at approximately 19:05 on Burrel Street. According to a police spokesperson, the shop owner was assisting customers when four unidentified men stormed the premises. The intruders aggressively ordered everyone to lie face down on the floor. During the standoff, one of the assailants pressed a firearm against the complainant’s head and issued threats. Fortunately, none of the customers sustained injuries during the terrifying encounter.
The suspects forced their way to the cash register, eventually fleeing the scene with the business owner’s cellular telephone, an undisclosed amount of cash, and multiple bottles of alcohol from the store’s shelves. They escaped while the victims remained on the floor. Once the suspects had departed, the shop owner contacted the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Acting on an urgent alert that the suspects’ getaway vehicle—a white Hyundai SUV—was en route to the Piketberg area, patrol officers quickly mobilized. A spokesperson for the Piketberg SAPS confirmed that members on patrol spotted the vehicle at a nearby petrol station. Upon stopping and searching the SUV, authorities discovered five male occupants ranging in age from 19 to 36.
A thorough search of the suspects and the vehicle yielded significant evidence. Police confiscated a firearm with eight rounds of ammunition, a knife, five cellular phones, several bottles of whisky, and an undisclosed sum of cash believed to be the proceeds of the Lamberts Bay heist. All five suspects were arrested and detained at the Piketberg SAPS.
Authorities officially registered multiple dockets against the group, including business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen property. The five men are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, 17 August 2026, to face these charges.
