FREE STATE – A major Welkom kidnapping rescue operation has led to the arrest of six suspects after Free State police successfully foiled a violent ransom plot. Specialized law enforcement units collaborated to track down and apprehend the alleged perpetrators, ensuring the safe recovery of the abducted 29-year-old man.
The ordeal began on Friday, 24 July 2026, when the 29-year-old man was allegedly abducted at gunpoint from his home in Steyn. The incident was immediately reported to local Welkom Police, prompting the rapid involvement of the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit operating out of Thabong.
During the captivity, the victim’s relatives were contacted via phone by the alleged kidnappers, who demanded an undisclosed sum of money in exchange for his safe return.
To resolve the high-stakes situation, authorities activated the Welkom K9 Unit alongside the Parkweg Tactical Response Team (TRT). Acting on crucial intelligence, the joint task force traced the suspects to a residential property located in Flamingo Park.
Officers executed a strategic perimeter around the targeted residence. When the suspects realized law enforcement had arrived, they attempted to escape but were rapidly subdued and taken into custody by the waiting teams.
During the search of the property, authorities located the 29-year-old victim confined inside the garage with his hands bound tightly behind his back. Officials noted that he was in a severe state of shock and had sustained visible injuries, including trauma to the back of his head and bruising on his hands and feet.
A thorough search of the premises yielded the seizure of two unlicensed handguns, assorted ammunition, and three motor vehicles. Subsequent investigative checks confirmed that one of the recovered vehicles had previously been reported stolen in Winburg.
The six male suspects, ranging in age from 28 to 46, are slated to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026. They will face a docket of serious charges, including kidnapping, extortion, illegal possession of firearms, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
