Two Arrested in Bloemfontein CBD After Parkweg Bike Squad Seizes R15,000 Worth of Khat

Members of the Parkweg Bike Squad arrested two foreign nationals on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, following the discovery of khat plants with an estimated street value of R15,000.

At approximately 12:30, Parkweg Bike Squad Relief A was conducting stop-and-search operations on Power Street in the CBD. Officers observed a foreign national carrying a large black bag deemed suspicious. Upon approaching and searching the individual and the bag, members found multiple bunches of khat plants.

The 53-year-old male was arrested for possession of an undesirable dependence-producing substance in contravention of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140 of 1992.

While the first suspect was being processed at the police station, a 45-year-old male, identified as a fellow countryman, arrived to inquire about the first suspect’s status. He was carrying a black plastic bag. A search of the bag revealed additional bunches of the same substance. The second individual was subsequently arrested.

Both suspects remain in detention and are expected to make their first appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
