Nonprofit FreeSA Proposes Constitutional Amendments to Address Political Flaws

Nonprofit organization FreeSA is set to submit a “Power to the People” constitutional amendment bill to Parliament by the end of May, aiming to tackle South Africa’s political and economic challenges.

The proposed amendments focus on three key areas:

  1. Reducing the Cabinet from 72 members to 30 (15 ministers and 15 deputies), saving an estimated R130 million in taxpayer funds.

  2. Decentralizing policing to provincial levels while maintaining national oversight for cross-border crime and intelligence.

  3. Ending state monopolies, requiring a 75% parliamentary majority to approve them, and encouraging public-private partnerships to boost efficiency.

FreeSA spokesperson Reuben Coetzee emphasized that the reforms aim to improve governance efficiency and redirect funds to critical sectors like infrastructure and job creation. “South Africans are shareholders in this country, and government must be accountable to them,” he said.

The organization is urging public feedback via freesa.org.za before the May 31 submission.
