KZN Police Officers Face Murder Charges Over Fatal Shooting of Suspected Extortionists in Durban

DURBAN, KwaZulu-Natal — Three KZN police officers are facing murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of four suspected extortionists in Durban, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn intense community scrutiny and an ongoing Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) probe.

Sifiso Maphumulo, Vusumuzi Phewa, and Manelisi Rabi recently made a brief appearance at the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court. The charges stem from a March 2025 incident on Duff’s Road, where police had reportedly been tracking the four men for alleged extortion and other criminal activities.

While the officers initially claimed that the group opened fire first, prompting retaliatory action, this account was directly contradicted by video footage that later circulated on social media. The footage appeared to show the men complying with police instructions prior to the shooting.

The incident has sparked strong reactions locally. Residents of the KwaMashu hostel community recently gathered in large numbers, wearing IFP colors, to show solidarity with the families of the deceased. One community member noted that the victims were active participants in a local community policing forum, challenging the initial criminal narrative.

Reinforcing the community’s stance, the sister of two of the deceased victims stated that the public would not be rallying behind the families if the men were truly criminals.

An Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson confirmed that the accused police officers have cooperated fully with the ongoing investigation. The spokesperson noted that IPID has received complete cooperation from the provincial police management, the provincial commissioner’s office, and district commissioners.

“We have the full cooperation of the provincial management of the police, the provincial commissioner’s office, as well as his district commissioners,” the IPID spokesperson stated. “We are constantly bringing details and statistics on cases against police officers to the management forum on at least a quarterly basis. We have obtained their versions of events, investigated those claims, and the evidence we gathered ultimately brought us to the point of prosecution against the officers.”

The spokesperson also emphasized that the investigative body is not ruling out the possibility of adding further charges as the case and evidence review progress.
