POP Officials Seize Drugs and Imitation Firearm, Suspect Arrested

 A 29-year-old man is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court following a targeted operation by the Public Order Police (POP) in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police spokesperson confirmed that members followed up on intelligence regarding the presence of illicit items at a premises in Scheldt Walk. The operation commenced at approximately 01:00 on 03 March 2026.

Upon searching the residence, officers discovered a substantial quantity of narcotics, including 97 Mandrax tablets, 49 small packets of crystal meth, and two-and-a-half ecstasy tablets. An imitation firearm was also found on the premises.

The suspect was arrested on the spot and faces charges of possession of drugs and possession of an imitation firearm. He remains in custody and will appear before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once formal charges have been laid.
