MPUMALANGA — An intelligence-led operation culminating in a significant Elukwatini firearms arrest has resulted in four male suspects being taken into custody for the unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition. The successful bust unfolded during the early hours of Thursday, August 27, 2026, targeting a suspected illegal weapons transport route.
The operation was initiated at approximately 04:00 when off-duty members of the Crime Prevention unit received a credible tip-off regarding a taxi allegedly transporting illegal guns. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the officers immediately placed themselves on active duty. With the logistical support of the Visible Policing (Vispol) Commander, who provided a dedicated vehicle, the team set out to trace the suspected taxi and verify the claims.
Following up on the intelligence, the police team successfully intercepted the white taxi in the Elukwatini area. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded significant results: officers recovered two rifles and approximately eight rounds of live ammunition hidden inside.
Following the discovery of the illegal weapons, the four male occupants of the taxi were apprehended at the scene. They have been officially charged with the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and are expected to face the relevant legal proceedings.
Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, publicly addressed the incident. Modise commended the Crime Prevention members for their rapid response and dedication, highlighting the successful recovery of the firearms and ammunition as a critical step in keeping illegal weapons off the streets.
