Kariega Drug and Firearm Arrest: Suspect Charged After Police Roof Entry Uncovers Illegal Cache

KARIEGA – A 33-year-old man is facing multiple criminal charges following a Kariega drug and firearm arrest conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combating Unit. The operation, which culminated in the seizure of narcotics and an unlicensed weapon, underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat illicit activities in the region.

According to the SAPS Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combating Unit, the arrest occurred on 23 August 2026 at approximately 15:30. The tactical operation was initiated after the unit received actionable intelligence regarding the sale of illegal substances at a residential property located on Stow Street in Central Kariega.

Upon arrival at the premises, the suspect allegedly attempted to conceal the contraband. To secure the scene and prevent the destruction of evidence, law enforcement officers executed a rapid entry through the roof of the building.

A subsequent search of the property yielded a significant illicit cache. Authorities confiscated a total of 45 dagga plants, a black bag containing 27.2 grams of processed dagga, and an unlicensed .22 calibre pistol accompanied by nine rounds of ammunition. All items were seized as evidence.

The 33-year-old suspect was taken into custody and formally charged with the illegal possession of drugs, as well as the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The SAPS Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combating Unit confirmed that the accused is scheduled to appear before the Kariega Magistrates Court on 25 August 2026 to face the aforementioned charges.
