BLOEMFONTEIN – A significant drug arrest at Bram Fischer International Airport has resulted in the detention of a 36-year-old woman suspected of attempting to smuggle an estimated R300,000 worth of crack cocaine. The intercept occurred before the suspect could board a scheduled flight to Johannesburg, highlighting ongoing law enforcement efforts to dismantle illicit trafficking operations.
According to an Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) Supervisor, members of the Visible Policing Unit were alerted at approximately 11:26 on Saturday, 22 August 2026, regarding suspicious material detected by an airport scanning machine. Upon responding to the call, officers were directed to a hairdresser doll head belonging to the 36-year-old female suspect.
Local Criminal Records Centre experts were subsequently summoned to process the scene. Upon opening the doll head, authorities removed foam stuffing to reveal 232 stones suspected to be rock drug or crack cocaine. The contraband was formally counted in the presence of the suspect.
A further body search conducted by the Visible Policing Unit yielded an additional R93,220 in cash found in the suspect’s possession. The 36-year-old woman was immediately placed under arrest at the airport.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) confirmed that a case docket for possession of drugs, alongside an additional charge of money laundering, was officially opened at the Navalsig Police Station. The DPCI will lead the ongoing investigation into the matter. The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court in the near future.
