Dewetsdorp Police Arrest 46-Year-Old Man for Sexual Assault and Attack on Police Officer

DEWETSDORP – The Dewetsdorp police have arrested a 46-year-old man for reported sexual assault and an attack on a police officer following a late-night incident in the Free State. The swift intervention highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the region.

According to a South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, preliminary investigations indicate that the incident began at approximately 21:00 on Friday, 21 August 2026. An 18-year-old female victim was working as a bartender at a local establishment on Church Street when the 46-year-old suspect arrived with a companion. The suspect allegedly began harassing the victim by repeatedly making explicit and inappropriate remarks about her private body parts. The victim ignored the comments and continued with her professional duties.

The situation escalated at approximately 23:00 as the victim prepared to close the establishment. While all other patrons had departed, the suspect insisted on finishing his drink. After consuming his beverage, the suspect allegedly made explicit vulgar suggestions before subjecting the victim to unwanted physical touching and inappropriate sexual acts.

The victim successfully pushed the suspect away and secured the premises. As she moved outside, the suspect continued to hurl verbal insults and engage in aggressive, inappropriate gestures. The victim immediately contacted her parents, who arrived at the scene and summoned the South African Police Service.

Upon the arrival of law enforcement, the suspect turned aggressive and launched a physical assault against a SAPS Reservist Constable. Police members on the scene successfully subdued the individual and placed him under arrest.

The 46-year-old suspect remains in police custody. He faces formal charges of sexual assault, attack on a police officer, and malicious damage to property. A SAPS spokesperson confirmed that the suspect is scheduled to appear in the Dewetsdorp Magistrate’s Court soon to face these allegations.

This arrest reinforces the local police commitment to responding decisively to GBVF-related incidents, ensuring the safety of community members and holding perpetrators accountable under the law. #EndGBVF
