The Fraserburg Regional Court sentenced Gert Johannes, 32, of Fraserburg, to 22 years of direct imprisonment on 20 April 2026 for the murder of his girlfriend. The court also declared Johannes unfit to possess a firearm.

Court evidence established that on Saturday, 12 April 2025, Johannes initiated an argument with the victim and stabbed her, resulting in severe bleeding. Later that evening, he moved the victim to his bed and subjected her to further assault by burning her with boiling soup.

On Sunday, 13 April 2025, Johannes arrived at the Fraserburg Community Service Centre and handed himself over to police.
