Woman Arrested for Murder of a Boy

Police have arrested a 34-year-old woman in connection with the murder of a 10-year-old boy that occurred on Monday, 16 March 2026.

According to a statement by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident took place at Azania Extension 22 in Embalenhle. It is alleged that the suspect took the child earlier in the day, claiming they were going to an open field to pray. She later returned alone and reported the child missing.

A search operation was immediately launched by police, community members, and a private security company. The body of the boy was discovered a few meters from the riverbank in Azania.

The SAPS has strongly condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence against a child. The arrest forms part of the police’s priority focus on crimes against women and children, in alignment with the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

Authorities have urged community members to remain calm and allow the legal process to unfold. Parents and guardians have also been encouraged to ensure the constant safety and supervision of children.

The suspect is due to appear in court soon on a charge of murder.
