Wanted Murder Suspect Arrested After Two-Year Manhunt Following Killing of Police Detective

In a breakthrough for a long-running investigation, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit has arrested a 40-year-old man accused of murdering a police official and evading capture since June 2023.

Sankelo Anele Ndabezitha was traced and apprehended in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, following an extensive nationwide search. His arrest concludes a manhunt that included media appeals and the deployment of informants.

The charges against Ndabezitha are grave: murder of a police official, attempted murder, discharging a firearm in a municipal area, and malicious damage to property.

The Fatal Incident

The case stems from a violent incident in Batlharos, near Kuruman, on the evening of 11 June 2023. According to police, an altercation broke out between Ndabezitha and a drinking companion. While community members initially diffused the situation, the confrontation reignited the following day.

On 12 June, the suspect allegedly confronted his companion at the man’s rented shack, armed with a firearm. The companion fled into the main house on the property for safety. That house was the residence of Detective Sergeant Sepadile, who was attached to the Batlharos Detective service.

In a tragic turn, Ndabezitha is alleged to have shot Detective Sergeant Sepadile twice at close range, killing him. The suspect then fled the scene with the firearm.

The Investigation and Arrest

Following the shooting, the Hawks circulated Ndabezitha’s details and tasked informants with locating him. The pursuit involved multiple units, including the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) and Gauteng National Priority Violent Crime units.

The coordinated effort finally led investigators to Orange Farm. After his arrest, an identification process confirmed Ndabezitha was the wanted suspect.

Court Proceedings

Ndabezitha was charged and brought before the Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 3 December 2025. The case has been postponed to Monday, 8 December 2025, for him to secure a legal representative and for a formal bail application.
