Two suspects believed to be part of a gang that robbed a cash-in-transit vehicle in Verulam on Monday were shot and killed in a confrontation with police in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The fatal shooting occurred just after midnight in the Nhlazatshe area of Shayamoya, Edendale, approximately 24 hours after the initial robbery.
The robbery took place on Monday afternoon at the intersection of Jabu Ngcobo and Fairview roads in Verulam. A group of at least 12 suspects allegedly forced a cash delivery truck to a halt. During the incident, the assailants disarmed the security guards, stealing their three firearms, before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed sum of money.
According to police reports, intelligence gathered shortly after midnight on Tuesday indicated that some of the individuals involved in the Verulam heist were hiding in Edendale.
When officers arrived at the identified premises, they were met with gunfire, leading to a shootout. Two male suspects were shot and sustained fatal wounds during the exchange. A third suspect managed to evade arrest.
Following the confrontation, law enforcement recovered a cache of weapons from the scene, including two rifles and a handgun, along with several rounds of ammunition. Additionally, a VW Polo believed to have been used in the commission of the cash-in-transit robbery was found on the property. Inside a garage attached to the premises, authorities discovered a bakkie (light delivery vehicle) fitted with multiple different number plates.
