On Thursday, 05 March 2026, a coordinated law enforcement operation in Mpumalanga led to the arrest of two suspects in connection with a kidnapping and ransom case.
At approximately 08:00, members of the Anti-Hijacking Task Team Enhlanzeni, the Pilgrim’s Rest Illicit Operational Team, and Crime Intelligence were conducting routine tracking operations in the Enhlanzeni District when they received intelligence regarding an active kidnapping.
According to police reports, the suspects were allegedly demanding a ransom from the victim’s family. Initial investigations revealed that a payment of R1,000, sent by the family as part of the ransom demand, had been withdrawn in Matsulu.
Operational teams were immediately deployed to the area. During the follow-up investigation, the suspects instructed the family to send an additional R2,600, with instructions that the money be withdrawn at a local supermarket.
Authorities planned and executed a tactical take-down operation, positioning members strategically around the complex. When the suspect arrived to withdraw the funds, he was identified and apprehended without incident.
A search of the suspect revealed the kidnapped victim’s cellphone in his possession, which was confiscated as evidence.
Further investigation led officers to Matsulu A, where a second suspect, aged 23, was traced and arrested. The first suspect is 39 years old.
It was later established that the victim had been released by his captors prior to the takedown operation, near Barberton. He was safely reunited with his family.
Both suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear before the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 06 March 2026, facing charges related to kidnapping and extortion.
