Two Arrested in Connection with Mob Justice Murder in Petsana Township

Detectives have arrested and charged two suspects linked to a fatal mob justice incident in which a man was brutally assaulted after being accused of housebreaking.

The incident occurred on Monday, 11 August 2025, at approximately 17:20, when police were called to a scene in Petsana Township near Reitz. Upon arrival, officers found a severely injured man surrounded by community members. Reports indicate that the victim had been beaten with a sjambok and knobkerrie after being accused of theft. He was rushed to a hospital in Bethlehem for emergency treatment but tragically succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, 14 August 2025. A murder case has since been opened for investigation.

Through community cooperation, police traced and apprehended two suspects on Friday, 15 August 2025. Authorities have indicated that more arrests are imminent. The detained suspects are set to appear before the Reitz Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 18 August 2025, to face murder charges.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane has strongly condemned the barbaric acts of mob justice, noting similar incidents in Harrismith and Bohlokong. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable, no matter how long it takes.

“We remind the public that while citizen’s arrest is constitutionally permitted, no one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” stated Lt. Gen. Motswenyane. “Suspects must be handed over to the police, who will ensure they face a court of law.”

Police urge anyone with additional information to come forward as investigations continue.
