Three Suspects Fatally Wounded in Police Shootout

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is probing a fatal shooting incident that occurred in the Tlokoeng Central Business District on Saturday, following a confrontation between police and suspected criminals.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), three male suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire on 22 February 2026.

It is reported that at approximately 14:30, members of the Tlokoeng SAPS Community Service Centre (CSC) responded to a complaint of a shooting in the area. Upon arrival, they discovered that members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU) were already on the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that the NIU members were conducting duties in Tlokoeng based on intelligence regarding the suspects. Police allegedly spotted the suspects in a vehicle, and as they approached, the occupants opened fire, sparking a shootout.

All three male suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene. Officials observed three vehicles believed to be linked to the suspects at the scene.

Firearms believed to have been used in the exchange were seized and will be subjected to forensic analysis.

In accordance with standard procedure for all incidents involving police action, the case has been handed over to IPID for further investigation.
