A 22-year-old suspect, who was arrested for attempted murder, was shot and killed by police on Monday morning after he overpowered officers, took them hostage, and opened fire inside the holding cells at Ntuzuma Police Station.
The incident began on Monday, 16 March 2026, while two police officers were in the process of charging the suspect, who had been detained since Saturday, 14 March. According to police reports, the suspect overpowered the officers and began assaulting them. He managed to take the keys to the main cell door from the officers during the scuffle.
The officers were able to call for backup. When uniformed police arrived at the scene to assist, the suspect grabbed a firearm from one of them. He then fired shots, locking the officers inside the cells with him.
The ensuing hostage situation lasted for several minutes. Tactical police teams eventually managed to penetrate the cells. During the operation to end the standoff, the suspect was shot and sustained fatal wounds.
Two police officers—a man and a woman—sustained minor injuries during the initial struggle. The officers who were held hostage will be temporarily withdrawn from active duty to undergo psychological debriefing sessions.
