Scholar Transport Driver Arrested After Fatal Crash

Police have arrested a 22-year-old scholar transport driver following a crash that killed 12 learners in Vanderbijlpark on Monday, 19 January 2026.

The driver was arrested after being discharged from hospital. He is scheduled to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates’ Court within 48 hours, facing charges of twelve counts of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.

Police confirmed that 12 learners died at the scene. Five others were taken to hospital, and one has since been discharged.

The driver of a truck involved in the crash was unharmed. The truck’s passenger was injured and is receiving hospital treatment.

Police investigations are ongoing, including the collection of witness statements.
