Reckless Driver Stop Leads to Drug Bust

A routine patrol by Mthatha Central SAPS Crime Prevention members turned into a significant drug bust on Friday afternoon, 23 January 2026, resulting in the arrest of a 39-year-old man.

The incident unfolded at about 12:30 in the Highbury locality, when officers spotted a driver of a white VW Polo Vivo operating the vehicle in a reckless manner. The members immediately intervened and stopped the car.

A subsequent search of both the driver and his vehicle proved fruitful for law enforcement. Officers discovered a quantity of tik (Crystal Meth) drugs inside the car and also in the suspect’s pockets. An undisclosed sum of money, believed to be proceeds from drug dealing, was also seized.

The suspect has been charged with possession of drugs and dealing in drugs. He is scheduled to face these charges in the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Monday, 26 January 2026.
