North West police have opened an investigation into a violent cash-in-transit robbery that resulted in a murder on Friday afternoon, 19 December 2025.
The incident occurred at approximately 17:15 on the R510 road between Rustenburg and Northam, near Dikweipi Village outside Mogwase.
According to preliminary reports, security personnel were travelling in a cash van from Northam to Rustenburg when they encountered a burning vehicle blocking the road. Believing the obstruction to be related to a community protest, the crew decided to take a detour through Dikweipi Village.
As they prepared to divert, a group of heavily armed men opened fire on the van, injuring the driver. The assailants then disarmed one of the security officers, stealing his 9mm pistol and ammunition. The suspects subsequently used explosives to blast open the cash-in-transit van.
During the robbery, the perpetrators—who were using a Toyota GD6 and a Toyota Fortuner as getaway vehicles—were loading stolen cash when an unidentified man attempted to join them in gathering money. It is alleged that one of the robbers shot and killed the man at the scene.
Police confirm that no arrests have been made at this stage and that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
