A 21-year-old man arrested in connection with the mass shooting that claimed nine lives in Marikana last month made his initial court appearance on Monday.
Nkcubeko Libala appeared before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on 23 February 2026, facing charges related to the incident that occurred on 17 January 2026. He was apprehended by members of the Serious and Violent Crime Unit in the early hours of Friday, 20 February 2026.
Police reports indicate that Libala was taken into custody at his residence in Lower Crossroads, Philippi. During the arrest, authorities confiscated four cellphones from his possession, which have been retained for evidentiary purposes as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case against Libala has been formally postponed. It will return to court on 2 March 2026 to allow for further investigation.
Libala remains in custody. According to police statements, detectives are actively pursuing additional suspects believed to be involved in the January shooting.
