Man Receives 27-Year Sentence for Rape and Assault

Lehlohonolo Weleman was sentenced to 27 years in prison by the Free State High Court on 27 February 2026 for rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The conviction follows an incident on 27 December 2024. Court proceedings heard that at approximately 02:30, a 38-year-old woman returned to her home in Matatiele Location, Bloemfontein, after a family gathering. She was asleep when she heard a window break. Upon investigating, she encountered Weleman, who told her not to scream.

The victim opened the door for Weleman, who was known to her as an orphan raised by her father. Once inside, Weleman threatened her with a knife and raped her using a condom. He threatened to kill her because she could identify him. The victim pleaded for her life. Weleman fell asleep at the residence. The victim reported the matter to police the next morning, leading to his arrest.

Prosecutor Mr Cwele and investigating officer Captain Nikiwe Mokatsanyane handled the case under the guidance of Magistrate Mr Zweni.

The court declared Weleman unfit to possess a firearm. His name will be entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
