The vandalism of anti-apartheid icon Robert Sobukwe’s gravestone has sparked widespread outrage in the community of Graaff-Reinet (Robert Sobukwe Town).
The incident, discovered this week, saw the gravestones at Sobukwe’s memorial site shattered into pieces. This marks the fourth time the Sobukwe gravestones have been vandalised, according to the family.
The family expressed deep heartbreak, stating they are enduring repeated pain as their grandfather’s memory is disrespected. They highlighted efforts to uplift his name positively, including a unified peaceful march held on the past Saturday. Supporters of the name change, those who love and understand Sobukwe, and the broader family participated in the event through the town.
Family members described the act as disgraceful and recurring, yet noted that it also demonstrates the enduring power and influence Sobukwe holds today, as well as the fear his name still instills in some quarters.
The vandalism followed closely after the peaceful march in support of the name change from Graaff-Reinet to Robert Sobukwe Town, which has divided the community.
The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), founded by Robert Sobukwe, condemned the act strongly. A spokesperson for the party stated that this is not merely an act of criminality but a deliberate show of disrespect to Sobukwe’s memory. They asserted categorically that the vandalism represents retaliation for the successful and peaceful march over the weekend.
The PAC has opened a criminal case with the police, describing the incident as part of a pattern of political provocation rather than an isolated event. The party called for a swift and thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
At the same time, the PAC emphasised its commitment to responsible and progressive engagement, including extensive consultations with all stakeholders—even those who opposed the renaming. The process, they said, is about fostering unity while restoring the truth of South Africa’s history.
No suspect has been arrested, and investigations are continuing.
