Foreign National to Appear in Court for Possession of Illicit Cigarettes Worth R70,000

A 25-year-old foreign national is scheduled to appear before the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 12 March 2026, following his arrest for the possession of illicit cigarettes.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Lebowakgomo Crime Prevention Unit conducted an operation on Wednesday, 11 March 2026, targeting illicit and illegal-related crimes within the Lebowakgomo policing area in the Capricorn District.

According to police reports, officers acted on intelligence regarding a residence in Unit B, Lebowakgomo, that was allegedly being used as a storage facility for illicit tobacco products.

Police proceeded to the identified premises and conducted a raid, resulting in the apprehension of the suspect. During the search, authorities confiscated illicit cigarettes bearing the brand name Remington Gold. The seized items included seven master boxes and 144 loose cartons, with an estimated street value of R70,000.

The suspect was immediately arrested and charged accordingly. He is expected to face the charge of possession of illicit cigarettes when he appears in court.
