The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tshwane has arrested five suspects in connection with a business robbery and vehicle hijacking that occurred at a jewellery store in Brooklyn earlier today.
According to police reports, the incident took place at approximately 09:50 at a local shopping mall. Five individuals, aged between 32 and 38, targeted a jewellery store. It is alleged that one suspect entered the premises posing as a customer before forcing entry. While one suspect damaged display cases, accomplices removed jewellery from the store. The group subsequently hijacked a vehicle to flee the scene.
A coordinated pursuit was initiated by the SAPS Tshwane District Stabilisation Team, with assistance from private security personnel. The suspects were intercepted and arrested in the Pretoria Central CBD.
Upon interception, a shootout occurred between the team and the suspects. A security officer sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and is receiving medical attention. Three of the suspects were also injured and were transported to a medical facility, where they remain under police guard.
Authorities recovered the hijacked vehicle, a firearm with ammunition, and the stolen jewellery.
The SAPS has commended the collaboration and swift response of all law enforcement and private security personnel involved, stating that the rapid reaction led to the apprehension of the suspects and the recovery of stolen property.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
