Attorney arrested for fraud involving Road Accident Fund claims

The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation resulted in the arrest of Mr Michael Senotse Mabunda (42), after he was served with a summons in connection with a case registered at Pretoria-North police station in August 2019.

It was reported that Mr. Mabunda, who was an attorney, lodged claims with the Road Accident Fund on behalf of his clients. The Road Accident Fund paid an amount of R10, 562,173.21 into his trust account. However, Mr. Mabunda allegedly never transferred these funds to his clients, resulting in significant financial losses.

Mr. Mabunda made his first appearance in the Pretoria Specialized Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday, 15 October 2024. The case has been postponed to 26 November 2024 for further proceedings.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks’ in Gauteng Major General Ebrahim Kadwa has welcomed the success.

“This arrest serves as a critical reminder to all legal professionals about the importance of maintaining trust and integrity in handling client funds. Fraudulent activities will not be tolerated, and offenders will face the full might of the law,” He concluded.
