Bloemfontein Man Gets Eight Years for NPA Office Burglary

A 29-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in direct imprisonment on Thursday for a 2023 burglary at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) offices in Bloemfontein.

Dino Sherwin Kekana appeared in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on 13 March 2026, where he was convicted and sentenced for business burglary and theft. The sentence relates to an incident at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), security personnel discovered that a window had been forced open. An inventory revealed that four laptops, valued at approximately R100,000, along with other personal items belonging to staff members, had been stolen.

The case was initially registered as a business burglary before being transferred to the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit for further probing.

The breakthrough in the case came on 12 September 2025, when the investigating team traced and apprehended Kekana at the Wepener Correctional Centre. At the time, he was already serving a sentence for an unrelated offense. Authorities confirmed that Kekana was positively linked to the NPA office burglary through DNA evidence.

In addition to the eight-year prison term, the court declared Kekana unfit to possess a firearm.
