33 Undocumented Children Intercepted at Beitbridge Border

The Border Management Authority (BMA) announced the interception of a group of 33 undocumented minor children, aged between 4 and 15, at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on Wednesday. Two adult male suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.

According to authorities, the interception occurred when a junior border guard on a relief shift stopped and searched a Zimbabwean-registered minibus taxi. The vehicle was found to be transporting the children, who were traveling from South Africa to Zimbabwe without the required documentation.

“Two adult Zimbabwean male suspects have also been arrested for allegedly facilitating this illegal movement across the border,” a BMA statement confirmed. Criminal cases have been opened against both suspects under the Immigration Act, specifically related to the facilitation of illegal entry and movement of undocumented persons.

Following protocol, all 33 children were immediately placed in the care of the Department of Social Development. The BMA stated this action was “in line with the child protection protocols and South Africa’s domestic and international obligations to safeguard vulnerable persons.”

BMA Commissioner, Dr. Michael Masiapato, commended the border guard for his vigilance and professionalism. “The interception underscores the effectiveness of enhanced border management measures and the authority’s firm stance against crimes involving children,” Dr. Patra stated.

In a direct appeal, Dr. Masiapato implored parents to refrain from sending undocumented children to ports of entry. “The Border Management Authority will not tolerate the exploitation of children or the facilitation of illegal cross-border movement. We remain committed to protecting the integrity of our borders while upholding human rights and child protection principles.”

Investigations into the incident are ongoing. The two arrested suspects are expected to appear in court later this week.
